Warm weather beckons a lighter wine and not being a big fan of white wine, I discovered years ago that I really enjoy a dry rose. This Saturday is National Rose Day and in its honor MyScoop wanted to educate you on this wine that is as beautiful as it is delicious.
Saturday isn’t just National Rose Day it is also the birthday of a fellow writer’s mom who is facing a tough fight. Always a fighter for others, you can read more about Rosemary Shaw by clicking here. This Saturday June 13, writer Erin Shaw Street is asking friends, family, and strangers to raise a glass of rose, make a toast, take a photo, and tag #roseforrosemary for her beautiful mom’s birthday.
Here are 5 things you should know about rose wine:
1. Rose wine is not the Beringer White Zinfandel of the 1980’s your mom drank, skip the sugary mass-produced pink wines.
2. To make most rosé wine, red grapes are lightly crushed and left to macerate with their red skins for a little while (anywhere from a few hours to a few days), after which the juice is strained out from the solid stuff (called “must”) and fermented in tanks.
3. The longer the grape skin is left in the wine, the darker the rose.
4. The newer, the better the rose. Unlike other wines, rose is best when freshest.
5. Always opt for a dry rose. You do not want sweet, dry is key.
